ARCHIMEDES’ LADDER
In ESCALIER D’ARCHIMEDES, the audience is presented with a work of art reminiscent of the American artist, Alexander Calder, with which the acrobat’s love for visual art is revealed.
Asian gongs, balanced delicately against vials of water, are arranged in ascending order and hung so high that the artist has to leap in order to reach them.
One doesn’t have to try to find meaning in this act. To marvel and smile is enough when the innovator Maedir Rigolo hoists his astonishing mechanism higher and higher towards the ceiling and until he finally balances the shaky, gigantic construction against his own body weight.
The ARCHIMEDES’ LADDER is homage to the great mathematician from ancient times, who proved the law of leverage in an exceptional manner. “Give me a place to stand, and I shall move the earth,” Archimedes boldly exclaimed. With just as much boldness and humour, the artist constructs ARCHIMEDES’ LADDER out of gongs and suspended vials, which at six meters high shakes precariously, but never falls!
