NOUVEAU CIRQUE –
A NEW ART FORM?
Rigolo’s trademark, the elaborate combination of dance, acrobatics, theatre, music and visual art, emerged from thirty years of stage productions. Since the anniversary programme BEAUTIFUL TURNS, Rigolo has focused on the dramatic aspect of Nouveau Cirque. This movement was founded in France, where it is as renowned an art form as opera, theatre, dance and music. Nouveau Cirque is not actually a type of circus, but simply incorporates the concept of lining up individual, separate acts.
Each act has its own dynamic and unfolds as a unique performance. But in Nouveau Cirque, the line-up of the different acts is far from arbitrary:;the special quality lies in the thematic structure of the performances. In addition, Nouveau Cirque doesn’t just focus on its high acrobatic achievements, but is marked – just like Rigolo’s earlier productions – by the phenomenal synthesis of acrobatics and dance with theatre, music and visual art. The audience witnesses a poetic spectacle that is acrobatically stunning as well as scenographically gripping and thematically sound.
The individual acts thus create a satisfying, complete dramatic program.
Individual acts do not just shine as parts of a single, chronological show, but can also be integrated into other performances. And because of that, the “used parts” of a Nouveau Cirque production do not simply get archived after the tour is complete, but artistically reinvented in other circuses, variety shows or even museums.
As the creator of innovative acts and performances with inimitable installations, Rigolo has won a reputation as the truly innovative “new circus”, touching and inspiring artists and audiences alike.
